The Secret sauce of Intelligent Automation

I’ve always been a big fan of sci-fi and have spent many years looking forward to the arrival of robots, Artificial Intelligence and next generation technology. So, it is with great excitement that I find myself as CEO of an organisation which specialises in building and implementing solutions using technologies commonly grouped together under the term Intelligent Automation.

Admittedly, using tech to improve worker productivity is unlikely to be made into a Hollywood blockbuster anytime soon. But I will retain my enthusiasm and excitement for the times in which we are living.

Intelligent Automation is a term commonly used to reflect streamlining business processes and automating complex decisions, through a range of technologies including Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Process Orchestration, natural language generation and Artificial Intelligence (AI). 

What does it mean for organisations?

The obvious conclusion to reach is that this will allow organisations to greatly reduce their costs and improve scale as they can transfer activities currently managed by people to the digital workforce.

To a large extent this will be the case. Historically we can see that improvements in technology capability results in a direct change of worker roles within businesses. The cost of repetitive tasks reduces and provides true economies of scale with the cost per transaction reducing further as the number of transactions increases.

But cost cutting benefits misses the opportunity we have. 

The secret sauce of Intelligent Automation is not in reducing expenses, but instead in the opportunity to improve customer engagement, by transforming digital transactions with customers – providing radically improved and customised services which can be rapidly tailored to meet specific needs in a way previously considered too expensive or difficult to achieve.

For this reason, the ownership of Intelligent Automation implementations should not reside in the back office. It should be sponsored by the CEO and be viewed as an opportunity to disrupt existing markets by creating fantastic experiences for customers. 

I believe all CEO’s must recognise the importance of Intelligent Automation, and the role it must play in their business. 

This is not a fad or something that can be avoided. The penetration of RPA is currently exploding at an incredible rate – breath taking in comparison to other enterprise software technologies. It is not going to go away anytime soon.

Companies who design Intelligent Automation strategies to improve customer engagement will have the greatest success and enjoy the benefits this futuristic technology brings.
